Last week I went to the Tragically Hip concert and it was amazing. If you live in Canada and don’t know who the Tragically Hip are, I’m not quite sure what you have been doing with your time for the last 20 years!
In a nutshell, the hip are an iconic band that signify (to me at least) everything that is Canada. Their lead singer, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and this tour is their last one ever. I know, it’s beyond sad.
I went to this concert knowing it would be terribly emotional. Everyone in that stadium knew that this was the last time they would get to see the band perform so I expected to see a lot of tears and sadness. What I wasn’t prepared for was the beautiful positive energy that I would feel.
If this is the first posting of mine that you are reading, I feel the need to explain to you that I am a big believer in energy. I actually have an atom tattooed on my arm to remind me of it. I don’t believe in giving my energy or focus to things that don’t serve me. I believe that positive thinking and focusing on good energy can change your life. And I believe that energy is a tangible force that you can feel, the same as gravity. That’s me.
When I stood in that stadium surrounded by people who shared the same love for the hip that I do, I could actually feel the postivie energy and love in the air. I actually turned to my wife at one point and said “Breathe in the healing energy and positivity. There’s so much of it!” (I was also extremely inebriated at this point so I’m sure I shouted it in her face but still.) 20,000 people were connected and sending nothing but good vibes to the man on stage and it was amazing.
Now, even if you don’t know what I’m talking about you still inheritantly know what I’m talking about. If you’ve ever been to a professional sports game, you have definitely felt it. There is a tangible “something” in the air. When your team scores and the crowd erupts you can feel the energy I’m talking about.
There is a buzz in the air that is contagious and gets you pumped up. The same happens with defeat. I remember when the Toronto Blue Jays were in the playoffs ended up losing to Kansas. The entire city felt that loss and there was almost a heaviness in the air. The energy was pretty low for a few weeks and everyone was affected by it.
What does this have to do with you and your everyday life? Great question. The thing I’m trying to stress to you is that you don’t have to tap into a stadium full of people and their energy in order to feel positivity and use it everyday in your own life. There is really no downside to feeling good and being positive. What’s the worst that can happen? You live your life feeling happy and spreading joy? Ya, that sounds pretty terrible to me too! *eyeroll*
Like anything that has to do with mindset, it starts with being aware and actively working to change those feelings that don’t serve you. I know, I know, more work but honestly what is more important than trying to make yourself a better and happier person? Start first thing in the morning.
When you wake up take stock of how you feel. Are you cranky? If yes, why? Try to think of things you’re grateful for. Maybe it’s your favourite shampoo that you get to use or maybe you love getting a coffee each morning. Simply be aware of the things that make you feel good and do more of them. You don’t have to get up and meditate for 2 hours each day to begin to feel more positive. Here are a couple things you can try right now:
- Put on your favourite song and dance by yourself
- Buy the person behind you a cup of coffee
- Snuggle your favourite animal
- Get dressed in your favourite outfit and strut
- Go for a walk in a park or forest
- Make someone’s day
It’s really that simple. You’re not looking to change the world, just change yourself. Be aware of how you feel and how you want to feel and shift where you need to.
Maybe this posting is the beginning for you. Something in you brought you to this post. Some thing in you connects you to my energy and you are reading this posting because of it. Oooooo, so sci-fi!!
