We ain’t messin’ around with this one!
Who remembers Manwiches, the canned sloppy joe mix? If you grew up in the 80’s like I did and had parents that used ground beef in 6/7 weekly dinners, then this was probably a staple in your house too! I loved them and always ate at least 2 or 4 . Oh nostalgia…
A few months ago I was at the grocery store and spotted a can of Manwich on the shelf. I had a pang of longing for the simpler time of my youth and bought it. It’s possible I was drunk. I often go grocery shopping drunk. (that’s a joke, I like to make jokes sometimes.)
You probably won’t be shocked by this but when I actually made the Manwiches they were pretty gross. Way too sweet and full of god only knows what. Memory has a funny way of putting rose coloured glasses on everything, doesn’t it? Because in real like they were a far cry from the ambrosia I had in my mind.
I decided to try and recreate a healthier sloppy joe that tasted delicious and was still nutritious enough that I didn’t feel like a huge bag of shit when I ate it. I think I succeeded pretty well here. I used ground chicken breast in the recipe but you can easily substitute for ground beef if you prefer. I also threw some coleslaw on mine but you can use whatever toppings your family likes. Go nuts! Make these babies, throw on some neon bike shorts and relive your youth!! And make sure you send me pics when you do!
